On August 25th and 26th CKR riders Paul Van Horsen, Kurt Ashley and Cliff Sloma competed in the 2010 Western States Police & Fire Games held at the Mustang Motor Plex in Reno, Nevada.
When we arrived at the track for practice we were greeted with a nice cool temperature of 106 degrees, and a MX track with doubles, table tops and step up jumps. After a few laps and a lot of suspension adjustments we got used to all the air time the course offered and prepared for the race the following day. To our benefit on race day the clouds came in and the temperature cooled to about 98 degrees.
Kurt Ashley put in two solid 4-4 moto finishes for 4th overall in the over 40
450cc class.
Paul Van Horsen finished 2-2 for second overall in the over 40 250cc class earning a Silver medal.
On Monday August 26th we returned to the MotorPlex for a 1 hour desert race. Now we were in out element! The course was a normal desert race, which was fast and rocky with some very challenging areas. Some of the MX guys decided not to do it because it was to hard.
On the site in lap Kurt found a hidden rock, which sent him over the bars and over the side of the trail. Kurt was beat up but was up and moving, but his bike was hurt. Bent handlebars, bent sub frame, dented front rim and a few other things were out of place.
A quick trip back the pits and the crew went to work. Marc Hiles, Cliff Sloma, PVH and Cliff’s dad (Clifford) went to work on Kurt’s bike. We had him up and running in about 15 minutes and heading for the starting line. The bike was feeling better then Kurt at this point. When he fell he landed on some rocks, and his ribs and arms were hurting him. I could see by the look on his face that he was in pain, but he was determined to race.
When the flag dropped Kurt went to work and put in a solid ride earning a Silver Medal for the day.
Cliff Sloma made his debut at the Police games. This was Cliff’s first desert race and he quickly learned about hidden rocks, sand washes, shale up hills and how course markings sometimes disappear during the race. Cliff tackled all of Nevada’s obstacles head on and put in an outstanding ride earning a Gold medal in his class.
Paul Van Horsen earned a Silver Medal in the over 40 250cc class and had a solid ride.
For the event out team ended up with 3 Silver medals and 1 Gold medal. Great job by all! Thanks again to Marc Hiles and Clifford Sr for all the help and taking care of us between races and keeping us motivated.
We’re already looking forward to the 2011 games at Glen Helen.
